Department Information

The main aims of the department are to encourage pupils to react and respond to a wide variety of experiences as well as offering opportunities to pursue Art and Design outwith the school environment. Pupils are encouraged to view Art and Design as an important part of their everyday life, now and throughout their future.
These aims are achieved in the following ways:-
-
Helping and encouraging pupils to understand and use the language of aesthetics and to appreciate the nature and function of art forms within the context of their own work, within a historical context and within the context of their own environment and culture.
- Providing pupils with particular perceptual skills needed to comprehend and respond to art and design forms and to the visual environment.
- Teaching the necessary skills involved in the use and manipulation of materials, tools and equipment of the artist and designer.
-
Improving the quality of childrens' learning - their abilities to think, perceive, make decisions, work through problems, to be involved in their own evaluation and assessment etc., and to heighten and improve their personal perception of the work of artists and designers and their reactions and responses to it.
The Art and Design department has six staff and six Art rooms. All staff are mutually supportive in making the department a safe, happy, stimulating, fun place in which to learn and teach, with every pupil being stretched to their full potential.
