DRAMA

Drama - S

Standard Grade Drama is a 2 - year course which provides a wide range of activities in Drama and theatre skills. The course is offered at all levels, Foundation, General and Credit.

Aims

The educational aims of the course are to:

  1. encourage pupils to explore and use language, movement, and theatre as a means of expression and communication.
  2. encourage pupils to explore their own and others' attitudes, assumptions and values.
  3. extend the range and depth of imagination.
  4. develop the abilities necessary to interact positively with others and explore the nature of relationships.
  5. increase and develop the pupils' knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre.
  6. develop practical skills in theatre.

Structure and Content

The course is structured in terms of language, movement and theatre activities as a means of achieving the aims outlined above. These aspects will be inter-related, although there will be opportunities later on in the course for pupils to explore a particular interest in more depth.

Pupils will be involved in activities such as; Characterisation, Improvisation, Role-play, Mime, Movement, Acting, Direction, Set Design, Stage Lighting and Sound, Costume, Make-up and Scriptwriting.

Assessment

This is in 3 broad areas - Creating, Presenting and Knowledge and Understanding. Although the course is mainly practical and will be assessed largely through continuous observation and evaluation, pupils will be expected to keep a folio of classwork and complete a short written folio of evaluation pieces. At the end of the two years there is a written examination of Knowledge and Understanding.

Drama - NU

Title: Creative Drama 1

This National Unit is offered for those pupils who wish to pursue their interest in drama and who are not studying the subject at Standard Grade.

Content

The National Unit aims to develop the creative drama skills pupils were introduced to in S2 through a wide variety of activities including Characterisation, Improvisation, Role-Play, Mime and Movement.

Assessment

At present the National Unit leads to the qualification - Creative Drama I.
