The Earth

Geology - NU

Title - The Study of the Earth

This course will be taught within the Geography Department.

Purpose: This is a National Unit which is designed to introduce pupils to some important aspects of the Earth's geology.

Content

  1. The history and structure of the Earth and its place in time.
  2. Minerals, rocks and fossils.
  3. The effect geology has on our scenery, especially in Scotland.
  4. The effect geology has on people and the environment.

Teaching Approaches

Pupils will have access to a wide range of interesting materials in a course which will encourage them to learn a great deal about the scientific background to some key aspects of the geology of planet Earth.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES - NU

This National Unit will provide opportunities for pupils to develop an awareness of some of the many environmental issues which are causing real problems in key locations throughout the European Community. By completing the 40 hour Environmental Issues course pupils will acquire a knowledge of environmentally sensitive areas in Europe and they will be able to identify the location of specific areas which will be dealt with as case studies. Pupils will find out about the human, economic and environmental pressures which create problems in these key areas and they will learn about the ways in which these environmental issues are being approached by both countries and pressure groups within the European Community. The following is a list of some of the case study issues which will form the core of the Environmental Studies National Unit.

  7. The Cairngorm Mountains
  8. The Coto Donana Wetland Region
  9. The Energy Debate
