FRENCH - Standard Grade
GERMAN - Standard Grade
Aims
A Standard Grade course in French or German is designed to cater for the whole ability range. Its main aim is to teach pupils to communicate in the foreign language. An important implication of this will be an increased use of the foreign language in the classroom, and a reduction in the dominance of English as the medium of teaching.
Content and Structure
Pupils will be placed in sections based on their performance during Sl and S2. During S3 emphasis will be placed on the language skills most likely to be useful to pupils i.e. Listening, Reading and Speaking. Pupils will be assessed under these headings in the following proportions:
Writing in the foreign language will of course continue to be practised in the classroom, but it will be examined as an optional extra at Credit and General levels only. It does not form part of the overall award and is shown as an endorsement on the certificate. Candidates intending to study Modern Languages at Higher Grade will be expected to take the Writing element. Pupils who have worked to a high standard in S1 and S2 may be permitted to study a second language.
Conversational Spanish - National Unit
Pupils will have the opportunity to be introduced to spoken, written and aural Spanish in everyday situations. No previous knowledge is required.
