HOME ECONOMICS
Home Economics - S
This Standard Grade course, suitable for boys and girls, covers three
levels, Foundation, General and Credit and one assessment system serves all
three levels.
Aims
The aim of the course is to provide pupils with a knowledge and
understanding of the skills required to cope with everyday life. This is a
practical subject encouraging learning by "doing" and "finding out".
Content
There are three areas of study:-
- HEALTH
- MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
- INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES
These study areas are divided into units of work lasting approximately
10 weeks.
During the course the pupils will:
- Increase their Knowledge and Understanding of these three areas.
- Be encouraged to Handle Information using text books, recipe books,
graphs, charts and leaflets.
- Solve Problems by working on assignments and case studies, and
- Develop their Practical and Organisational Skills.
- This last is a major area of the course and one which pupils
particularly enjoy. A training at any level in Home Economics will mean
acquiring special skills which have an application in a wide variety of
interesting careers in food, catering, textile and retail industries. Home
Economics as well as offering a sound basis for a career, can also be an
exciting source of interest for leisure and social interaction in adult life.
