Mathematics - S

Aims

All pupils follow a Standard Grade course in Mathematics. The aims of the course are:

  1. to enable pupils to develop, to the limit of their capability, the mathematical skills and understanding required for adult life, for employment and for further study and training;
  2. to provide all pupils with challenges that are attainable and with the opportunity to reach their highest levels of performance.

Content and Structure

Mathematics is a problem solving activity which draws its subject matter from a wide range of topics in the traditional fields of Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra and Trigonometry.

Based on their progress during S1 and S2, pupils will be placed initially in either a Foundation/General Course or General/Credit Course. During S3 their progress will be monitored by using a carefully structured programme of assessments, and teaching approaches will be varied to ensure that each pupil is presented with mathematical work at an appropriate level.
