National 4/5 Geography Fieldwork

In June 2015, a group of National 4/5 Geography students undertook a geography fieldwork trip to the River Almond in Perth. This trip was in association with Geobus, run by St Andrews University, who offer free educational experiences to schools.

As part of the excursion, the students learnt how sample appropriately, collect accurate data, and discussed limitations and improvements with regards to their data collection. This gave the students the vital skills and experience that is required for embarking on a career in geography. Since returning from the trip, the students have been able to process, analyse and interpret the data they have collected to inform their National 5 assignment, accounting for 25% of their overall grade.

In October, a second National 4/5 class will be undertaking this fieldwork experience which will be beneficial for their upcoming studies.

This excursion embeds not only the skills and knowledge for future research studies regardless of their geographical nature but helps learners to understand the interplay and relationship between curriculum areas. This awareness promotes lifelong learning and develops critical thinking skills.

History

National 5 and Higher pupils are now able to access notes for the courses they will be studying on Glow.  Should pupils require any information about this they should speak to Ms Tidd, in the first instance, or any member of the History team.

Modern Studies - Study Support

Modern Studies study support for all pupils will be running every Tuesday evening after school in the Modern Studies area of the faculty from 3:30pm

Advanced Higher Geography

Thirteen pupils In Advanced Higher geography are going to Kindorgan to complete Geographical Methods and Techniques from the 2nd - 4th of September.  This is an Integral part of the AH course – accounts for 30% of their grade.  We have to teach and demonstrate the techniques and discussing health and safety issues and encourage the pupils to complete their own risk assessments as well as completing statistical techniques using their data collected.

Kindrogan field centre trip for AH has been well established amongst Fife schools.  There are 6-7 schools every year that participate and is an excellent opportunity to share our expertise and exchange ideas.
